Running a Brick and Mortar Business

I am a partner in Xiao Bei, a taiwanese food stall founded by 4 engineers who worked in UMC (Singapore Branch), formerly UMCi.

The stall was officially opened in year 2005 in Century Square and has been around for more than 3 years already.

Our previous mode of management was almost a total hands-off approach to the business i.e. letting the aunties do the operation and running of stall.  Well, it has been this way since we started because we were all busy with our own full-time job…(If you are in the semiconductor industry, you will understand that being engineers in Etch Process or Integration module is and how much overtime you have to work.)

Everything has been the way it is, standard sales - stagnant, eroding profits due to the unbelievable rise in raw material prices which many are in the range of >40% since last year, until our Teacher from Taiwan paid us a visit in June this year.

We had a tongue-lashing by him over the way we run the business.  After he left, we (the management of Xiao Bei) sat down to discuss the future of the business and understood that we have “wasted” 3 years.  (Details about this in my later posts in www.sgxiaobei.com).

The interesting thing was when i was drafting this post, i receive an email to watch a interesting video for business owners called BRAND Mastery video.  It is a 68 minute long video on finding the soul of your business, finding the Unique Selling Proposition & Personality (USP) and lastly, 3 steps to increase your sales by 30% - GUARANTEED.

I am definitely going to brainstorm USP for Xiao Bei to bring our sales to the next level and for all business owners or would-be business owners, do check it out.

Wish me success and wish you success too :-)

And yes… the solution will be on USP.

Good USP will actually differentiate your market value compare to your competitors.
